When Joey Gonzalez walked into his first Barry’s Bootcamp class at 26, he wasn’t thinking about a career move. He simply wanted a great workout.
He found something more — a path.
What began as a fitness class quickly turned into a passion for the brand and its community. Gonzalez became an instructor, immersing himself in the culture and operations of the growing boutique fitness company. Over time, his role expanded as he took on more responsibility and leadership inside the organization.
A decade later, he was running the company as CEO.
Growing Within a Brand
Gonzalez’s journey reflects a path that many people overlook when exploring franchising and business ownership: building a career inside an established brand.
Rather than starting as an owner, he began as part of the team. By learning the business from the inside — operations, culture, customer experience, and growth strategy — he developed the experience and perspective needed to lead at the highest level.
In 2015, he stepped into the CEO role, helping guide Barry’s continued expansion. Last year, he transitioned to executive chairman, continuing to support the brand’s long-term growth.
The Power of Initiative
Gonzalez often shares simple advice for young professionals hoping to grow within a company: take initiative and reach out.
He still dedicates time each week to respond to messages from students, trainers, and professionals seeking guidance. Many of these conversations start with a simple LinkedIn message or email from someone looking to learn more about career growth.
His perspective is straightforward: most leaders want to help those who are motivated and curious. Asking thoughtful questions and seeking mentorship can open doors that might otherwise remain closed.
A Different Way Into Leadership
Not every path in franchising or brand growth begins with ownership. Some begin with employment and evolve over time into leadership, partnership, or executive roles.
Working within a franchise or branded system can provide:
- Hands-on operational experience
- Exposure to structured systems and training
- Opportunities for advancement
- A deeper understanding of how successful brands scale
For many professionals, starting inside a brand can be a powerful way to build knowledge before pursuing ownership or leadership roles of their own.
